Ghost Hunt & Sleepover at The Old Jail Inn, Rockville, Indiana
A jail that held people for 119 years. Tonight, it holds you.
For 119 years, the only people who slept inside the Old Jail Inn were the ones who had no choice. From 1879 until 1998, this stone building on the downtown square in Rockville was the Parke County Jail. Felons awaiting trial. Locals thrown in the drunk tank to sober up. Men with nowhere left to go and nothing left to lose.
The heavy iron doors closed on all of them, and for more than a century the building did exactly what it was built to do. It held people in.
Some of them, it seems, never finished their sentence.
There is nothing staged about the Old Jail Inn. The cell block is original. The iron bars are original. The barred windows still wear their heavy grates. Downstairs, the bar is built directly into the old drunk tank, the cell where Rockville’s troublemakers were left to dry out. You will not be walking through a museum’s idea of a jail.
You will be investigating, and sleeping inside, the real thing.
The jail, the county courthouse, and the boiler house behind it were all drawn up by the same architect, Thomas J. Tolan and Son of Fort Wayne. That boiler house has its own dark footnote. It was the site of the last hanging in Parke County. In 1888, a man named Earl Stout, who had killed a friend on a hunting trip, was put to death on this property. The jail kept taking prisoners for another 110 years after him.
The History That Refuses to Die
A county jail does not hold happy people. For almost twelve decades, every person who passed through these doors arrived at the worst moment of their life: arrested, accused, drunk, desperate, or condemned.
The building absorbed all of it. The fear in the holding cells. The boredom and rage of the long-term prisoners.
The despair of men who knew they were not walking back out. And on this very property, the final moments of Earl Stout, the last man Parke County ever put to death.
Buildings like this do not forget. The Old Jail Inn has been investigated, slept in, and lived in, and the same accounts come back again and again, from owners, from staff, and from guests who arrived knowing nothing about the place and left with a story they cannot explain.
The Ghosts of the Old Jail Inn
The reports from this building are consistent and specific, and they come from owners, staff, and guests alike, many of whom knew nothing about its history before they arrived.
The most common is the sound of footsteps in the cell block: heavy, deliberate and unhurried, the slow tread of someone walking the line the way a guard once did. People hear them clearly. There is never anyone there.
Then there are the doors. Guests report hearing the iron cell doors slam, a flat, heavy crash through the building, even though the doors are held open with locks and chains and cannot move. Names are called aloud from empty rooms, including those of the owners when they were alone in the building, by something that should not know them. On the second floor, shadow figures and floating orbs are seen by witnesses and then are simply gone.
Most unsettling is the contact. Guests have felt cold hands in the dark, a tug at the hair, a pull at clothing, a touch on the shoulder, and in some cases the distinct sensation of someone climbing into bed beside them in the night. One guest, with no knowledge of the building’s past, woke convinced her partner had spent the night gently stroking her hair. He had not touched her. She was later told of a man who once lived on the property and cared for the jail, an uncle who used to settle his young niece to sleep that exact way, and who died in a fire on the site.
Your Investigation
This is a guided overnight ghost hunt led by the experienced Haunted Rooms America team. After a full history and ghost briefing on arrival, we run structured vigils through the most active areas before opening the building up for free investigation in the early hours.
The Cell Block – the source of the footsteps and the slamming doors. EVP and spirit box work behind the bars, in the dark.
The Second Floor – where the shadow figures and orbs are seen. Lights-out vigils and trigger object experiments.
The Drunk Tank – the original holding cell, now part of the bar. Group vigils in one of the most atmospheric corners of the building.
The Corridors and Common Areas – where the touches and hair-stroking are reported. Table tipping and group work.
Free Investigation – in the final part of the night the jail is yours, equipment in hand, at your own pace.

Reviews
Everything was well organized and smooth. There was no gimmick, it started off as a quiet night paranormal wise, maybe because there was a long game of soccer going on right outside. Nothing to be done about that. Mid-Orange Correctional facility is now also part sports complex. The guides demonstrate tools used for investigating and even though the night started quiet, they didn’t hype up every little sound. They debunked sounds and explained what to look for. By 1am my husband and I ran into a group that came with their own equipment and had returned to a spot they had previously had activity. They welcomed us to join them and my EMF meter flew to red pretty steadily. They brought out the dowsing rod and it pointed at me directly so I was asked if I would hold it. I have never really understood how people don’t move the rods themselves. When I held it I realized there is a sleeve on the handle. So you’re not touching the rod. The rod was very responsive and corresponded with the EMF consistently for a few minutes. Anyway, what I liked most is it seems like the community cares. Everyone in the group checked in on my comfort. It was my favorite part of the night.
My son and I had a truly unforgettable experience at the Rock Island Roadhouse. The team that ran this event were all very knowledgeable of the history of the location as well as all of the equipment that they use. There were I think around 50 people total that attended and they broke us out into 4 separate groups. The first 4 hours of the night that were spent in the group setting taking turns with each team member didn't have much activity going on, however, once we were able to explore on our own the last 2 hours, we had some AMAZING activity! We even picked up what sounded like two whispering words in response to our questions! I highly recommend this group!
Did the Battleship North Carolina on April 3rd. I've already booked again for August. The hosts (Both physical and spiritual) were amazing. Recorded several EVP's throughout the night. Some very strong responses with dousing rods. Always skeptical about them, but there were strong responses, especially when we started talking to them like the military members they were. At one point I asked if they wished they had women on Battleships, he replied with a strong "Yes" and my Ghost Box replied with the word "Seductive". He really liked one of the young ladies with us. Turns out she was 18 and he was 20 when he died. Can't wait to do this again!
Just did a tour with this group on the Battleship North Carolina. Absolutely wonderful experience!! My husband and I will definitely be booking again. The leaders are super nice, respectful, and knowledgeable. Definitely recommend!!
Just finished our VIP overnight at Hotel Metropolitan in Paducah! Ms. Venita and Julie were the absolute best! They both made sure we knew what we were doing with equipment, and gave us a fantastic guided tour and explained the history so well. Venita especially made an impression on my group. She is super friendly and definitely knows what she's doing. Can't wait to see her again! I wouldn't want anyone else!
My dad, my sister-in-law, and I stayed at The Metropolitan for a paranormal investigation, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and full of history — but what made our stay exceptional was the incredible staff, Julie and Venita. These two amazing women went above and beyond the entire time we were there. They walked us through all the investigation equipment, helped guide us throughout the night, and made us feel completely comfortable and right at home. Their hospitality was top-notch — from the snacks and drinks they provided to the delicious hot chocolate they made for us during our late-night exploring. Their kindness, patience, and passion for what they do turned our stay into something truly special. If you’re looking for a place filled with charm, comfort, and staff who genuinely care, The Metropolitan Hotel is the perfect choice. Our overnight stay exceeded every expectation. Highly recommend! I wouldn't want anyone else to tour with!! 👻✨🍫
My son and I went to belles grove plantation and it was the best time! We enjoyed everything! Miss V was great! We got a few pictures of something in the windows and I actually started crying which I NEVER would let my son see me cry! It was kinda spooky but awesome at the same time! The team is great and I highly recommend going on one of their tours! Thank u all for a great experience
