Are you brave enough to join Haunted Rooms America at one of Indiana’s most haunted locations? Step inside the chilling confines of the old Randolph County Asylum in Winchester, where terror and mystery await. Investigators have fled this building in fear, abandoning their equipment in the face of overwhelming dread. Now, it’s your turn to experience the spine-tingling hauntings that make this place infamous.
Location History
The Randolph County Asylum, built in 1899, served as a refuge for the poor, mentally ill, and outcasts of society. Imagine the whispers of the past as you walk through its dark, decaying halls, where the spirits of orphans, the destitute, the sick, and the insane once roamed. The site’s history stretches back to the 1800s when a local farmer housed those who couldn’t fend for themselves. The first infirmary built on the grounds in 1851 burned down two years later, a second was shuttered for its horrific conditions, and finally, the stately building you’ll explore today opened, only to struggle through decades of despair until its closure in 2008, with the remaining patients transferred to other hospitals.
Death was a frequent visitor here. The nearby cemetery, with its 50 unmarked graves, whispers of lives lost to tuberculosis, accidents, old age, and suicide. As you stand among the graves, can you feel the weight of their stories pressing down on you? Many believe the spirits of these unfortunate souls still linger, waiting for someone to hear their cries.
During its operation, the asylum faced many tragedies, including a massive fire in 1896 that claimed many lives and led to numerous unmarked graves. Poor conditions, neglect, and cruelty were rampant, and the basement holds a particularly sinister reputation for torturous practices.
The Paranormal
The Randolph County Asylum is a haven for paranormal activity, featured on numerous ghost hunting shows, including Paranormal Lockdown, and Destination Fear. Visitors report chilling apparitions, disembodied voices, and unexplained noises. Feel the oppressive atmosphere and the goosebumps rise as you hear scratching sounds and the whisper of long-gone inmates.
Vigils in the attic and basement are particularly active, with many guests capturing full-body apparitions and spine-chilling EVPs. The sinister entity lurking in the basement makes its presence known, and the spirits of former residents, from young children to the mentally unstable, still roam the halls.
Many guests bring flowers for “Mary,” a former cook who is a protective spirit of the asylum. She is known for her clear and affectionate voice phenomena. The infamous prison cell on one of the wards challenges the bravest to endure a long vigil, where many have felt an intense, oppressive presence.
