Haunted Cresson Sanatorium & Prison Ghost Hunt
A Sanatorium. A State Hospital. A Prison. One Hundred Years of Souls on a Lonely Mountain
High on a ridge in the Allegheny Mountains, a few miles east of the small town of Cresson in Cambria County, a cluster of Tudor-style buildings, cell blocks and chain-link fences sits in silence. For a century this hilltop was a place people were sent and were not always allowed to leave.
The land was once owned by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who had picked the mountaintop as the site of a home for his mother. When she died before it could be built, Carnegie let the state have the land for a single dollar, on one condition: that it be used to build a sanatorium. Pennsylvania’s first Commissioner of Health, Dr. Samuel G. Dixon, designed the campus himself, and the Cresson State Tuberculosis Sanatorium took in its first patients in the winter of 1912.
Between 1913 and 1964, more than 40,000 men, women and children were treated at “The San.” They slept on open-air porches in the freezing mountain air, because fresh air was all medicine could offer before antibiotics. Whole families came through its doors. A children’s house held beds for patients under six. Not everyone who arrived ever went home.
When tuberculosis was finally brought under control, the San became the Lawrence F. Flick State Hospital, caring for patients with severe mental illness, and later the Cresson Center for people with intellectual disabilities. It closed in 1982, and the state spent over $20 million turning the complex into SCI Cresson, a medium-security prison for men. New cell blocks rose beside the old hospital buildings, and for 26 years the San held prisoners instead of patients.
In 2013, the prison closed and the inmates were transferred out. The buildings have stood largely abandoned ever since, and the stories have only grown louder.
The Spirits of Cresson
Cresson has been investigated by Ghost Hunters, by the Destination Fear team across a two-part season opener, and by countless paranormal investigators who describe it as one of the most active and most intimidating locations they have ever worked. Its reputation comes from all three of its lives, and the spirits are said to come from all three too.
The Children’s House
Built in the 1930s for the youngest tuberculosis patients, this building is said to have also housed the sanatorium’s morgue. Investigators report playful, child-like voices and the feeling of small hands, but also something far less friendly: shadow figures that dart across the corridors and seem to follow visitors down the hall, and EVPs with a hostile edge.
The Tunnels
Beneath the campus, pitch-black utility tunnels run between the chapel and the oldest buildings. Bangs and knocks echo through them with no one there, motion sensors are reported to trigger in empty stretches, and many investigators say this is where they feel most watched.
The Cell Blocks
Thousands of men served their time at SCI Cresson, and guests walking the tiers today report footsteps on empty walkways, voices from inside locked cells and shadow figures moving between them. The cell blocks are said to have once housed one of America’s most notorious serial killers, and the Destination Fear team chose to spend a night in that very block.
Grace Chapel and the Old Hospital
Built in 1914, Grace Chapel served patients, then prisoners, for nearly a century. Around it stand the medical buildings, with exam rooms, a dentist’s office and an X-ray table still in place. Visitors describe sudden drops in temperature, disembodied voices, the sensation of being touched and apparitions of what appear to be former patients and staff.
Patients who never recovered. Prisoners who never got out. A mountaintop that has kept its secrets for more than a century. We’re going in after dark. Are you brave enough to join us?

Cresson sits high in the Allegheny Mountains and the buildings are unheated, so it can be cold even in spring and summer. Please dress in warm layers and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, as the night involves walking between buildings and over uneven floors in an abandoned complex.
Before You Arrive
Please bring with you a form of photo ID, and your booking confirmation email (printed or on your phone).
We will be providing you with paranormal equipment to use, however, we will need something of value per group to hold onto as collateral (phone, car keys, watch, etc.)
A flashlight is a good idea, as many areas of the site are completely dark.
We will be providing snacks and drinks at intervals throughout the night.
Other than that, just yourself and an open mind!

We do not perform tricks and will not be running around with sheets on our heads!
You will be with like-minded people looking for the answer “is there really an afterlife”?

Reviews
Paulina and her staff were amazing. The location and experience was superb. Cannot wait to see them again!
My friend and I purchased the VIP tickets for overnight experience at Belle Grove Plantation. While it was cool to be able to explore the house and grounds, the actual ghost hunt got a little boring, especially as it got later. There wasn't a formal check in or introduction and our guide read the information about the location from her notes and did not encourage the guests to interact with the equipment. She talked to the spirits and allowed us to take turns with the Estes machine but it was mostly us sitting around listening to her. We were all ready for bed by midnight. Lovely location and the room itself was beautiful. I do wish breakfast was included. Overall a neat experience but I wish it was a little more exciting and interactive.
My daughter and I booked a Haunted Rooms tour at the Rawlins, Wy Historical Prison. It was so much fun! The haunted rooms teams was amazing, they were knowledgeable with their paranormal investigation equipment. They were attentive yet also allowed us the opportunity to explore and investigate on our own as well. We got some awesome evidence. I was hit in the shoulder by a cabinet that was closed, but swung open with force. Scared the heck out of me, and the Haunted Rooms team member wasn’t able to debunk it because the cabinet door doesn’t move, even when unlatched. My daughter had her hair pulled. We had a cat ball with us that lit up on its own when we asked a spirit to touch it. We had 3 very intelligent conversations with spirits and used a spirit box with these conversations. It was seriously so much fun. I’ve always been a believer in the ability to communicate and connect with spirits, but to witness it personally without being able to debunk anything we experienced made this tour amazing. I look forward to booking again and I’m taking my son this time too.
We just completed the WY. Frontier Prison tour. We had a blast! Loved how they let you roam freely at the end of the night. Also, the use of their equipment & the snacks and refreshments provided are an added perk. Would highly recommend!
Just did a tour at battleship North Carolina and the night can’t be beat. Most definitely one of the most haunted places in NC.
My husband and I just toured the USS North Carolina Battleship this past Saturday. We had an AMAZING experience! Immediately booked another tour for the Bellamy Mansion and ordered paranormal equipment to use. Can’t wait til the next haunt!!!
We investigated the USS William A. Irvin in Duluth MN. It was a great experience, everyone was super friendly and helped whenever they could! if you are debating on signing up. Just do it! we had alot of fun!
Investigated Mortuary Manor in Toledo with my daughter. The guides were extremely knowledgeable about the equipment and different techniques to attempt to communicate with spirits. The owner was very very nice and was actively trying to help in any way he could. We had a very small group of 5 so we had the run of the place. It was a lot of fun and I definitely recommend to anyone interested in the paranormal. We definitely had some activity during the night. The experience made me want to try out other locations if I can. There were a few graduation parties going on in the area the night I was there so, I’d like to go back and see what I can find when it’s a little more quiet in the beginning of the night but it was a great experience!
Bought this as a gift to my brother. I went in not expecting much but had a great time at Valerie Hill winery. We caught some pretty cool stuff and he had a great Estes session. Highly recommend.
Everything was well organized and smooth. There was no gimmick, it started off as a quiet night paranormal wise, maybe because there was a long game of soccer going on right outside. Nothing to be done about that. Mid-Orange Correctional facility is now also part sports complex. The guides demonstrate tools used for investigating and even though the night started quiet, they didn’t hype up every little sound. They debunked sounds and explained what to look for. By 1am my husband and I ran into a group that came with their own equipment and had returned to a spot they had previously had activity. They welcomed us to join them and my EMF meter flew to red pretty steadily. They brought out the dowsing rod and it pointed at me directly so I was asked if I would hold it. I have never really understood how people don’t move the rods themselves. When I held it I realized there is a sleeve on the handle. So you’re not touching the rod. The rod was very responsive and corresponded with the EMF consistently for a few minutes. Anyway, what I liked most is it seems like the community cares. Everyone in the group checked in on my comfort. It was my favorite part of the night.
