The Jennie Wade House and the Gettysburg Orphanage both hold dark secrets, rooted in the tragedy and turmoil of the American Civil War.
This exclusive ghost hunt will take you deep into the paranormal, where the echoes of the past still resonate, and restless spirits wait for those brave enough to confront them.
The Gettysburg Orphanage
History
The National Soldier’s Orphan’s Homestead in Gettysburg tells a story of unimaginable cruelty in the aftermath of the Civil War. Established to care for children left parentless by the war, the orphanage initially offered refuge under the compassionate leadership of Philinda Humiston, widow of a Union soldier. However, when she left, a dark period began under the harsh rule of Rosa Carmichael.
Rosa’s brutal treatment of the children is the stuff of nightmares. Rumors spread of children being chained to walls in a dark, damp basement known as “the dungeon.” Others were subjected to torturous punishments, and some simply disappeared. Though Rosa was eventually forced out of Gettysburg, the horrors that unfolded within those walls left a permanent scar—and, many believe, an enduring presence.
Hauntings
The Gettysburg Orphanage is alive with paranormal activity, haunted by the tormented souls of the children who suffered there. Visitors report hearing disembodied voices, the eerie sound of chains clinking in the basement, and the laughter of unseen children echoing through the empty halls.
Shadows dart between rooms, and cold spots linger in areas where unimaginable cruelty occurred. Some guests have even seen the apparition of a young boy, his form flickering in and out of view, while others claim to have encountered Rosa Carmichael’s vengeful spirit, her presence felt through sudden cold and stomach-churning unease.
Jennie Wade House
History
The Jennie Wade House, built as a modest brick duplex in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, became a tragic symbol of civilian sacrifice during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.
Jennie Wade, born in 1843, was staying with her sister, Georgia McClellan, helping care for her nephew and baking bread for Union soldiers when a stray bullet pierced through two wooden doors and struck her in the kitchen.
Jennie was the only civilian killed during the battle, and her death turned her into a symbol of courage. After the battle, her body was temporarily kept in the cellar before being moved to Gettysburg National Cemetery, where she was buried with honor.
Hauntings
The spirit of Jennie Wade is said to still walk the rooms where she met her untimely end. Guests and staff often smell the scent of freshly baked bread and catch a whiff of her rose-scented perfume.
Apparitions of Jennie and shadowy figures have been seen wandering the halls. Some visitors feel a sudden, unexplained chill when standing in the exact spot where Jennie fell.
The house is also said to be home to child spirits, perhaps the orphans Jennie once cared for. Their playful energy manifests in the form of toys moving on their own, and some guests have reported feeling a tug on their clothing or hearing a cheerful “Hey!” as they explore the home.
Meanwhile, the presence of two male spirits—one in the cellar and one upstairs—adds to the unsettling atmosphere. These spirits are not always friendly, and their mischief includes moving objects and leaving cold spots in their wake.
