From Seminary to Battlefield

Standing at the corner of West High and South Washington Streets since 1813, this stately brick structure served as the founding home of BOTH Gettysburg Seminary and Gettysburg College – the two oldest Lutheran educational institutions in the Western Hemisphere! Known as “Linwood,” the Academy housed approximately 75 students during its peak, with future ministers studying theology in these very rooms.

But on July 1st, 1863, everything changed.

Sixteen-year-old Tillie Pierce stood on the Academy’s front portico with her classmates, watching 6,000 Union cavalry pass by. The next afternoon, her teacher cried out: “Children, run home as quickly as you can!” When Tillie returned days later, she recorded the transformation that haunts investigators to this day: “Within those same walls had been placed some of the wounded and dying heroes of the struggle.”

The Academy became an emergency field hospital. The side yard may have served as a temporary burial ground. And a Confederate artillery shell REMAINS EMBEDDED above the entrance – frozen in time, marking the moment this house of learning became something else entirely.
