Old Teller County Jail Ghost Hunts
Welcome to the former Teller County Jail in one of Colorado’s most historic and haunted cities!
The History
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the Outlaws and Lawmen Jail Museum, once known as Teller County Jail, stands as a relic of Cripple Creek’s tumultuous past. In 1890, the discovery of gold in a nearby stream by Robert Womack sparked a gold rush, transforming Cripple Creek into a bustling mining district.
This rapid growth attracted not only miners and investors but also thieves, outlaws, and various miscreants, necessitating the need for a robust law enforcement presence. The Teller County Jail, constructed in 1901, became the epicenter of justice and order in this thriving, yet unruly, community. Housing 4-6 inmates per cell, it was a facility designed to keep peace in a town burgeoning with wealth and marked by frequent criminal activities.
The Paranormal
The Outlaws and Lawmen Jail Museum is shrouded in tales of the paranormal and is without a doubt, one of the most haunted locations in CO. Visitors and staff have reported a range of unexplained phenomena that hint at the presence of spirits from its storied past. The sound of footsteps, believed to belong to a former guard, routinely echoes up and down the staircase, as if continuing their eternal rounds. The apparition of Rosie, a former jailer, has been sighted in her sleeping quarters, suggesting her spirit still lingers, forever watching over the premises.
In addition to these spectral guardians, the museum is rife with other eerie occurrences. Dark shadows move inexplicably in the last two cells of the first floor, where many inmates once resided. The catwalk, site of the only recorded death in the jail, is an area of heavy breathing and cold spots, indicating a lingering presence of despair and tragedy. Even the physical realm seems affected, with reports of the security door that separates the gift shop from the jail flying open with force, as if pushed by an unseen entity attempting to escape the confines of its imprisonment.
