One of the oldest buildings in Alabama, built in 1837, the St. James Hotel in Selma was used as the headquarters for Union troops during the Civil War, surviving the burning of city buildings after the Battle of Selma. It’s reportedly home to 3 known specters: Jesse James, Jesse James’ girlfriend Lucinda, and a dog.

The apparition of a man (believed to be James) wearing Cowboy attire from the 1880s has been witnessed by many guests and staff alike, walking out of rooms 214, 314, and 315 – the places in which he stayed during his many visits here. He’s also been seen sitting in the bar at his favorite corner table!

The spirit of his lover, Lucinda, has been witnessed walking down the hotel hallways, often preceded by the smell of lavender, which was known to be her favorite aroma. The ghost of a dog (James’ pet), is also known to haunt the hotel, running down corridors and barking in the hotel’s courtyard!
