Ghost Hunt Randolph Asylum w/ Haunted Rooms America
Are you brave enough to join Haunted Rooms America at one of Indiana’s most haunted locations? Step inside the confines of the old Randolph County Asylum in Winchester, where investigators have fled in fear, abandoning their equipment in the face of overwhelming dread. Now it’s your turn to experience the hauntings that make this place infamous.
This is not a theatrical haunt or a manufactured experience. It is a real former county asylum with more than a century of documented hardship, death, and reported paranormal activity—and it remains one of the most active investigation sites in the Midwest.
Built in 1899, the asylum housed the poor, the mentally ill, the elderly, and those society had nowhere else to put. Long before that, the property was used as an informal refuge beginning in the mid-1800s. Earlier infirmary buildings on the grounds were destroyed or condemned due to unsafe and inhumane conditions, culminating in the construction of the current structure, which remained in operation until 2008.
The site includes a cemetery with dozens of unmarked graves, believed to belong to former patients who died from illness, injury, neglect, and suicide. Records are incomplete, but tuberculosis outbreaks, fires, and overcrowding were persistent problems throughout the asylum’s history. Many former staff accounts describe the basement and service areas as particularly harsh environments, even by the standards of the time.
Reported Paranormal Activity
The Randolph County Asylum has been featured on Paranormal Lockdown and Destination Fear and continues to draw investigators due to consistent reports across multiple areas of the building.
Commonly reported phenomena include:
- Disembodied voices and direct-response EVPs
- Footsteps and movement in empty corridors
- Apparitions in upper wards and stairwells
- Temperature shifts and localized EMF spikes
The attic and basement are frequently cited as the most active locations. One spirit, often referred to as “Mary,” a former cook, is believed by many to be a protective presence and has been associated with clear voice phenomena. A former isolation cell within one of the wards is also a focal point for extended vigils due to the intensity of reported experiences.
This is not a scripted experience. Activity is not guaranteed—but when it happens, it tends to be intelligent, responsive, and difficult to dismiss.
