1910 Gila County Jail Ghost Hunts
Nestled in the rugged terrain of central Arizona, the old frontier mining town of Globe boasts a tumultuous and storied past. Its isolation and proximity to the San Carlos Apache reservation made it a hotspot for lawlessness, with a history marked by murders, stagecoach robberies, outlaws, lynchings, and Apache raids.
Given Globe’s history of lawlessness, the town required its own courthouse and jail to handle the high volume of criminal activity. The Old Gila County Courthouse, built in 1906, and the jail, constructed in 1910, were essential to maintain order and provide justice in this turbulent frontier town.
The Old Gila County Jail, connected to the courthouse by the notorious “Bridge of Sighs,” holds a dark and violent history. Convicted criminals would make the short, harrowing walk across this bridge, suspended 40 feet above the ground, leaving freedom behind for the unknown confinement of an 8×6 cell. This jail has been a witness to countless instances of violence, suicide, murder, and death, creating a perfect storm for paranormal activity.
The Hauntings
One of the most chilling incidents occurred during a news segment, where a reporter was attacked by an unseen presence that strangled her and pushed her against a wall. This terrifying event was only the beginning. When the Ghost Adventures crew visited the jail in Season 18, they experienced a plethora of paranormal activity, reinforcing the belief that a powerful, negative entity resides within its walls.
Past investigators and staff have reported unsettling phenomena, including growls emanating from empty cells, cell doors opening and slamming shut on their own, and an oppressive feeling that only lifts once they leave the building. Paranormal equipment often picks up wild, unexplained EMF spikes, and common occurrences include unexplained bangs, disembodied footsteps, and chilling screams.
Kingsley Old’s cell is a particular hotspot for strange occurrences. Accused of drowning his mining partner’s two young daughters in the Salt River in 1911, Olds attempted to feign innocence by shooting himself and claiming they were all attacked.
While imprisoned, he confided in a nurse that the spirits of the two girls visited him, standing outside his cell and shouting incomprehensible words. The night before his death, the girls beckoned him to join them. The next morning, Olds was shot and killed in his sleep by an unknown assailant, believed by many to be the vengeful father of the girls, who positioned themselves in the courthouse opposite his cell for a clear shot.
The Bridge of Sighs itself is steeped in death, with many convicted criminals attempting to escape their fate by jumping to their deaths during the walk from the courthouse to the jail.
The combination of these tragic events and the malevolent presence makes the Old Gila County Jail a prime location for a thrilling night of ghost hunting.
