The Old West-style of The Plains Hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming continues to draw a lot of guests. Aside from providing weary travelers a classic place to stay with modern amenities, it has also been delighting people with great food, ghostly encounters, and paranormal activities, the most popular of which is a woman named Rosie.

According to the hotel’s many legends, a bride named Rosie and her groom who were on their honeymoon were among the many guests of the hotel. One evening, the groom went to the lounge to enjoy a few drinks. However, while he was in the lounge, he met a prostitute. Having her husband gone for a long time, Rosie went looking, only to find him and the prostitute chatting and laughing at the bar. Rosie watched as her new groom and the prostitute headed upstairs. She followed them to the woman’s room on the fourth floor and in a jealous rage, shot the two of them using her husband’s gun. After that, she went back to their honeymoon suite and killed herself. The spirits of the three have been frequently seen by employees and guests of the hotel.

Hotel staff has heard laughing and crying coming from the room which was once Rosie’s honeymoon suite. Rosie has been spotted in her blue dress walking along the hotel corridors. The groom, wearing a black dress coat and a white shirt, is most often seen on the fourth floor and the basement. The “other woman” is frequently seen on the second floor, wearing her short red dress with white lace.

History

The Plains Hotel opened in 1911 and was Cheyenne’s premier hotel at that time. It has distinctive features which other hotels in the area did not have. The hotel had a stained-glass skylight and a two-story lobby mezzanine. The finely appointed guest rooms were also the talk of the town. The Plains Hotel was the result of the annual $1 dinner in December 1909 of the Industrial Club, now called Chamber of Commerce. The Club President, Thomas Heaney, said that Cheyenne was badly in need of a modern hotel. By February 1910, the Cheyenne Securities Company came into being with one purpose, the building of the hotel.

The hotel was designed by William Duboise. By June of 1910, the construction began. The total cost for the building of the hotel, including furnishings, was only $250,000. The hotel’s grand opening was on March 9, 1911. The band played until the wee hours of the morning while Army officers and ladies in elegant gowns danced, laughed and talked. Back then, the Plains Hotel was a five-story hotel with three elevators, 100 guest rooms, lush private baths, exquisite furnishings, telephones and other amenities which most of the time did not have.
