Anchorage Hotel Ghosts

If you are a doubting Thomas, you should go to the Historic Anchorage Hotel and it will make you a believer. Stories of ghostly happenings have been told about the hotel for many years.

One of the stories is related to the one-time Chief of Police, Jack Sturgus. He was the first police chief of Anchorage and he died just a few steps away from the Anchorage Hotel from a bullet in the back.

It is said that he visits the scene of the crime every year to find his killer, as his murder remains unsolved to this day.

Several guests have reported seeing the apparition of a young girl walking in the second-floor hall. The television in room 217 and 215 turns on and off on their own.

Faucets in the rooms’ sink and tub run on their own, despite regular checks by plumbers.

There is the ghost of the woman who hung herself while still wearing her wedding dress. It is believed she was heartbroken when her groom failed to show up on their wedding day.

Guests have also reported seeing pictures fly off walls and various faces and figures appearing in the hotel’s halls.

Hotel employees are bothered by these ghosts that regularly they have to keep a diary to log all the activity.

Anchorage Hotel History

Anchorage was still in its infancy stage when the original hotel was built at the corner of 3rd Avenue and E Street. For several years, the Anchorage Hotel was Anchorage’s premier lodging and meeting place.

For some time, it was the only hotel in Anchorage where you can eat meals served on fine china. Artist Sydney Laurence was the hotel’s most famous guest.

Most of his later years were spent in Alaska in his painting studio which was just located in the hotel’s lobby.

For a while, the hotel served as lodging under various names.

However, in 1989, under the hotel’s new ownership, it was brought back to life, thanks to the extensive renovation done to it.

Today, it stands out as an important part of the city of Anchorage.
