A STRUCTURED FIELD STUDY IN ONE OF OHIO’S MOST DOCUMENTED FORMER HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
Perched high above the rolling hills of Millersburg in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country sits Terrace View – a massive 60,000+ square foot long-term healthcare facility that once provided treatment for the elderly and those suffering from mental health issues. Spanning three floors across two distinct wings, this sprawling complex began with the original building constructed in 1958.
As patient needs grew over the decades, a major addition was completed in 1981, expanding the facility into the labyrinth of treatment rooms, administrative offices, and patient wards that stands today. For over five decades, thousands of individuals passed through these corridors seeking care, comfort, and healing.
When the facility closed its doors in 2005, it left behind not only its records and equipment, but a lingering presence — the kind that invites questions.
We also want to take a moment to acknowledge the many people connected to this place — the patients who came seeking help, the staff and caregivers who devoted their working lives here, and the families who carried those stories with them. Everything we do within these walls is guided by curiosity and deep respect for their experiences. Terrace View’s history is not simply something to be explored, but something to be honored.
THE LOCKED WARD: 3 SOUTH
One of the building’s most talked-about areas is 3 South, a secure ward remembered by former staff for its muted olive-green walls and reinforced windows — a reflection of the mental health practices of its time.
Those who worked the night shifts often spoke of faint conversations echoing through the empty hallways and the steady rhythm of footsteps moving when everyone was safely in their rooms. Even decades later, investigators continue to report similar sounds within the same wing, as if the ward itself remembers the lives once lived there.
THE BASEMENT
The basement level — known among some long-time staff as “the dungeons,” a nickname born more from its stark setting than from what occurred there — once housed patients who required the most supervision and support. The space was plain and utilitarian, reflecting the mental health practices of its time.
Even so, staff working night shifts often spoke of strange occurrences: the sound of chairs moving when no one was nearby, faint whispers drifting through the corridors, and distant cries long after the ward had fallen silent. One of the most unsettling reports described a steady scratching noise along the main hallway — a mystery that kept nurses wide awake through the early hours.
OVER TWO DECADES OF ABANDONMENT
Following its 2005 closure, despite a few short-lived attempts to repurpose the building, the majority of Terrace View was left abandoned for over 20 years – surrendered to decay, vandalism, and the relentless forces of nature. During this extended period of neglect, the building fell into severe disrepair, its halls choked with debris, rubble, flooding, and the forgotten remnants of its institutional past.
THE DISCOVERY
When restoration efforts finally began, workers discovered something deeply unsettling hidden beneath layers of building rubble and construction materials in the basement: ritual symbols and animal remains. What occurred in those spaces during the decades of abandonment remains unknown, adding a darker layer to the location’s already complex history.
A BUILDING REAWAKENED
After more than 20 years of neglect, Terrace View is finally receiving the love and care it deserves. Teams are now working around the clock to clean, repair, and make significant efforts to secure this historic building’s long-term future. As this dedication breathes new life into the deteriorating structure, something extraordinary has occurred: paranormal activity has dramatically intensified across both the original 1958 building and the 1981 addition.
What makes Terrace View particularly compelling from a research perspective is the undeniable correlation between restoration efforts and increased phenomena. As the building is honored with attention and preservation after decades of abandonment, reports of unexplained activity have escalated significantly – and continue to grow stronger with each passing month. Whether the restoration has disturbed dormant energies, awakened grateful spirits responding to the care being given, or simply made the building more accessible for investigation remains an open question.
DOCUMENTED PHENOMENA
Investigators now regularly capture disembodied voices throughout the building, particularly female voices that may belong to former nurses or patients who once occupied these halls. Visual encounters include a wheelchair-bound figure moving through corridors and the apparition of a woman standing motionless in a second-floor window.
During structured investigations, researchers have recorded intelligent responses through spirit communication devices, with entities appearing to answer direct questions in real time. Environmental anomalies occur with striking consistency: sudden temperature drops in specific zones without explanation, and the unmistakable sound of footsteps – not just from rooms above, but echoing through empty corridors and most unsettlingly, within the very same room where investigators stand motionless. Objects relocate independently between investigation sessions.
Perhaps most intriguing is evidence of mimicking behavior – during one investigation, the distinct sound of a dog’s collar jingling was heard, mirroring the caretaker’s service dog who was confirmed to be asleep and stationary at the time. This suggests an intelligence capable of observing and replicating sounds from the environment.
A LOCATION STILL AWAKENING
This is a focused field investigation within a site that has witnessed generations of human experience — care, recovery, hardship, and change. The residual energy within Terrace View seems to respond as the building undergoes long-overdue restoration, with activity growing more pronounced in recent months.
For those drawn to serious paranormal study, Terrace View offers a rare opportunity to explore a location where history still feels close at hand — a place where the echoes of those who once lived and worked here seem to stir as the structure itself comes back to life.
As we continue to study and preserve Terrace View, we remain mindful of the lives that shaped its story. Every sound, shadow, and whisper is part of a much larger human history — one built on care, struggle, and compassion. Our goal is to honor that history by approaching every investigation with respect, sincerity, and an open mind.
Understanding Terrace View’s complex past is a core part of the educational component of this workshop, as historical context forms the foundation of ethical paranormal research.
