North Dakota, like the rest of the American Heartlands, is seen as an all around wholesome place by most folks. However, the Prairie State also has a much darker side to share. One that involves ghosts and ghouls and things that go bump in the night.
Let’s take a closer look at the most haunted hotels in North Dakota.
4 - Sage Hill Bed & Breakfast, Anamoose
The Sage Hill Bed & Breakfast is a renovated schoolhouse which is now a popular accommodation choice for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life thanks to its remote location. However, it also happens to be one of the most haunted hotels in North Dakota.
The building was first constructed in 1928 and was one of the first schools in North Dakota. It was named ‘White School’ after Colonel Samuel White. As the population in the local area declined, the school was closed in 1968.
In 1996 the building was converted into the bed & breakfast it is now with the former classrooms becoming spacious guest rooms. Since the renovations it has also become apparent that the hotel is haunted! During the conversion, construction workers often commented on the fact that they did not feel as though they were exactly ‘alone’.
Guests of the inn often report smelling the strong scent of cigar smoke even though nobody is smoking and they often find their belongings going missing only to turn up in another area. The spirits are described as friendly if a little bit on the mischievous side!

3 - Rock Roof Inn, Glen Ullin
At first glance, the Rock Roof Inn looks like just another quaint and perhaps somewhat old fashioned bed & breakfast! However, there is a secret lurking behind the front door. You see, Rock Roof Inn is also said to be the home of a very active Poltergeist! His favorite trick is to open and close doors.
2 - Rough Riders Hotel, Medora
The Rough Riders Hotel has been around since 1884 and it is one of the most haunted hotels in North Dakota.
It was originally christened ‘The Metropolitan’, but when the community of Medora failed to grow as expected the name no longer seemed appropriate and in 1903 it was changed to The Rough Riders Hotel, in honor of Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders who served in the Spanish-American war. This seems fitting given that Theodore Roosevelt was the very first United States President to pay a visit to Medora!
It is said that there is the restless spirit of a little boy haunting one of the rooms on the uppermost floor of the hotel. Many guests have reported hearing his disembodied laughter and he is also said to enjoy flushing toilets when nobody is around as well! There has been no luck in identifying this little ghost boy or explaining why he is hanging around the hotel.
1 - Totten Trail Historic Inn, St Michael
In the past, the Totten Trail Historic Inn served as the living quarters for officers and their families in the late nineteenth century. Today, it operates as a bed & breakfast – one of the most haunted ones in the entire state of North Dakota. Many guests report seeing the apparitions of some of the officers who once called the property home.
There are also stories about a man and a woman who died in the inn shortly before it was renovated and these are believed to be the shadowy entities that have been spotted following guests around!
