Several stories have been told about the inn’s haunted reputation and they refuse to die down. In 1966, a newly-wed couple from New York was billeted in the hotel’s room 24. They were looking forward to being able to spend some time together, however, during the morning the bride looked very pale. Two weeks after they left, the innkeeper received a letter from the woman. In the letter, she narrated that she has always prided herself in being a sane person. However, on the night of June 14, she saw a ghost in the inn. She said that she was awakened in the middle of the night by a presence in the room. She saw a greyish figure at the side of the bed. It remained still and then slowly floated to the foot of the bed. After a few seconds, the apparition disappeared.
Room 24 is said to be the center of the paranormal activity of the hotel. However, other areas of the hotel have also been investigated by various television shows, such as Ghost Hunters, Ghost Village and A&E’s Psychic Kids.
History
The inn’s original structure was built in 1716 but the property only started operations as a hotel since 1889 and was then known as Monument Square. The Colonial Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1775, one of the buildings of the inn was used as a storehouse for arms, as well as food. The British came to seize the supplies and was met at the northbridge by the minutemen to what came to be known as the first battle of the American Revolution. There is a parade every April commemorating this battle.
In the 19th century, some parts of the inn were used as a story. The property also served as the residence. The author Henry David Thoreau lived there for two years while he was still attending Harvard. By the 1900s, the property was renamed Colonial Inn. It was purchased in 1988 by a German Hotelier named Jurgen Demisch and since then, has undergone various renovations.
