Tinker House Museum Ghost Hunts
Where Multiple Deaths, Seventy-Five Years of Unbroken Occupation, and a Landscape Steeped in Ancient History Have Kept the Spirits of Rockford’s Most Haunted House Active for Over Eight Decades
Tinker Swiss Cottage sits on a limestone bluff above Kent Creek on Rockford’s west side. A Swiss-inspired Victorian mansion built in 1865 by Robert Hall Tinker, surrounded by gardens, winding pathways, and grounds that include a Pre-Columbian Native American burial mound dating to between 1000 and 1300 CE. A cemetery once stood across the road.
The Tinker family were the only occupants of this house for seventy-five years. Robert, his first wife Mary, her father Josephus, her sister Hannah, her niece Marcia, and later Robert’s second wife Jessie all lived under this roof. One by one, they died here. Their funerals were held in the parlor. When the Rockford Park District opened the home as a museum in 1943, every piece of furniture, every painting, every diary, every item of clothing remained exactly where the family left it.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, featured on SyFy’s Ghost Hunters (Season 8), Ghost Lab, and Jack Osbourne’s Night of Terror, and investigated by dozens of independent paranormal teams, Tinker Swiss Cottage is consistently confirmed as one of the most active residential hauntings in Illinois.
The Tinkers never moved out. And they have no intention of being ignored.
The Hauntings
Mary Tinker
The spirit most frequently encountered. Mary has been seen peeping around corners and walking the upstairs hallways in period dress. The second-floor bedroom where she died from tuberculosis in 1901 is considered the most active room in the house. Visitors report sudden cold drafts, the sound of coughing, and a pale woman standing near the window. Mary is said to have strong feelings about men entering her room. Those who do report an immediate and oppressive sense of unease.
The Red Room
The upstairs guest bedroom where Mary’s father Josephus died, along with her sister Hannah, her niece Marcia, and possibly Jessie’s brother Will. Multiple deaths concentrated in a single room. Visitors report jiggling doorknobs, disembodied footsteps, full-bodied apparitions, and intense feelings of vertigo and nausea upon entering. Investigators have captured knocking sequences that appear to respond directly to questions.
Jessie Tinker
Robert’s second wife is seen frequently in her room on the second floor. Her dolls have been observed shifting position between visits. Her rocking chair has been reported moving on its own.
The Library
The single hottest room in the Cottage for paranormal activity. The heavy library door, which requires considerable effort to drag across the carpet, has been heard slamming shut when staff are alone in the building. Investigators have been struck by pennies that fall from the ceiling with no explanation. One investigator placed a penny on the balcony above as a test. Something threw it at his shoulder. As he ran for the front door, a second penny flew past him and hit the wall.
The Basement
Once the domain of the household servants, the basement now echoes with footsteps and disembodied voices. The spirits here are known to shush the living. EMF detectors, REM pods, and trigger objects have responded to investigator presence in the basement kitchen.
Robert Tinker
Robert has been sensed near his study by multiple psychics and visitors across decades. The smell of cigar smoke has been reported in rooms where no one is smoking — confirmed by museum staff as consistent with Robert’s habit documented in his personal diaries. EVP recordings have captured the sound of whistling, a woman humming, and a young girl speaking about the trains.
The Orphan Children
An orphanage once stood on what is now the Cottage’s parking lot. The Tinkers invited the children to ice cream socials on the lawn. The sounds of children playing are heard in rooms that are entirely empty. A ghostly blond girl has been sighted by multiple witnesses. Investigators using a ghost box were able to make contact with a child entity believed to have crossed over from the former orphanage grounds.
Paranormal Phenomena
- Full-bodied apparitions of women in period dress, reported by visitors who assumed they were costumed staff — the museum has never used costumed guides
- Apparitions seen drifting through walls and vanishing when approached
- The sound of children playing and laughing in empty rooms
- Disembodied voices and EVP recordings capturing direct commands to leave
- Doors slamming shut throughout the house, including the heavy library door
- Doorknobs jiggling in the Red Room with no one on the other side
- Pennies thrown from the ceiling at investigators with no plausible source
- Unexplained whistling heard throughout the building when empty
- Cold drafts, vertigo, nausea, and the sensation of being grabbed or led by the hand
- Cigar smoke with no source, consistent with Robert Tinker’s documented habit
- The piano reportedly playing by itself
- Activity documented across every floor, the basement, and the grounds

Feel free to bring along any of your own equipment including but not limited to EVP recorders, flashlights, cameras or video cameras.

There will be breaks and light refreshments are provided.
We are not out to try and convince the world of the existence of an afterlife. That’s for you to decide.
We can be Sceptical and logical yet open to other beliefs and prayers of protection will be carried out.
We do not perform tricks and will not be running around with sheets on our heads!
You will be with like-minded people looking for the answer “is there really an afterlife”?
However much we try unfortunately we can’t guarantee that members of the spirit world will make their presence known but we can at least guarantee that you will experience a fun and interesting night.

Reviews
Did the Battleship North Carolina on April 3rd. I've already booked again for August. The hosts (Both physical and spiritual) were amazing. Recorded several EVP's throughout the night. Some very strong responses with dousing rods. Always skeptical about them, but there were strong responses, especially when we started talking to them like the military members they were. At one point I asked if they wished they had women on Battleships, he replied with a strong "Yes" and my Ghost Box replied with the word "Seductive". He really liked one of the young ladies with us. Turns out she was 18 and he was 20 when he died. Can't wait to do this again!
Just did a tour with this group on the Battleship North Carolina. Absolutely wonderful experience!! My husband and I will definitely be booking again. The leaders are super nice, respectful, and knowledgeable. Definitely recommend!!
Just finished our VIP overnight at Hotel Metropolitan in Paducah! Ms. Venita and Julie were the absolute best! They both made sure we knew what we were doing with equipment, and gave us a fantastic guided tour and explained the history so well. Venita especially made an impression on my group. She is super friendly and definitely knows what she's doing. Can't wait to see her again! I wouldn't want anyone else!
My dad, my sister-in-law, and I stayed at The Metropolitan for a paranormal investigation, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and full of history — but what made our stay exceptional was the incredible staff, Julie and Venita. These two amazing women went above and beyond the entire time we were there. They walked us through all the investigation equipment, helped guide us throughout the night, and made us feel completely comfortable and right at home. Their hospitality was top-notch — from the snacks and drinks they provided to the delicious hot chocolate they made for us during our late-night exploring. Their kindness, patience, and passion for what they do turned our stay into something truly special. If you’re looking for a place filled with charm, comfort, and staff who genuinely care, The Metropolitan Hotel is the perfect choice. Our overnight stay exceeded every expectation. Highly recommend! I wouldn't want anyone else to tour with!! 👻✨🍫
My son and I went to belles grove plantation and it was the best time! We enjoyed everything! Miss V was great! We got a few pictures of something in the windows and I actually started crying which I NEVER would let my son see me cry! It was kinda spooky but awesome at the same time! The team is great and I highly recommend going on one of their tours! Thank u all for a great experience
