Building #5 is said to be the most haunted. Guests who were billeted in the rooms of Building #5 have walked into their rooms looking for a night of relaxation, only to see several bloody soldiers who are moaning in agonizing pain. They instantly disappear as the lights are turned on.
Apparitions of confederate soldiers and surgeons have been reported, as well. Many people have also claimed seeing blood stains appearing and disappearing mysteriously on the bedding of particular rooms.
Pools of blood can also be seen on the floor only to disappear quickly. One guest even reported that as the elevator door opened on the hotel’s second floor, the hospital was entirely in view.
Hotel Provincial History
The land on which Hotel Provincial stands was a grant from the King Louis XV. He gave it to Bienville Lieutenant Louis Boucher de Granpre in 1725.
The land was bought by Chevalier Jean Lavillebeuvre and then purchased and developed by the Roque and Laurans families during the 1800s. The land was sold to the French Market Ice Company in 1903.
Finally, the Dupepe family purchased the property in 1958 and the family built the buildings which became the hotel that opened in 1961.
Part of the building was used as a medicinal herb garden supplied to the Military Hospital which is just down the street. The slaves’ quarters and the townhouse were built in 1825 and the latest restoration was completed in 1967.
The 400 building was built in the 1830s was used as a retail store and living quarters. There was also a hardware store on the site that was bought and restored in 1964. The 500 building was once a military hospital.
It was sold by Archbishop Leon de Necke to Antoine Abat in 1831. The building was again sold to a lawyer and the building was torn down, giving way to two grand houses. The buildings were ravaged by fire but were rebuilt in the same year.

The Latrobe Room has been recently renovated and is beautifully appointed for corporate events or private meetings. It can easily accommodate up to 60 guests. The Ice House Bar is just adjacent to the lobby and is the perfect place for an evening drink after an entire day spent sightseeing.
Things to Do
Provincial Hotel is located in the heart of the French Quarter and it is just a few blocks away from the world-famous Royal and Bourbon Streets.
One can also take in the sights and sounds of Jackson Square, which is also one of the finest places to take a rest in. There are also several galleries in the Arts District just along Julia Street on the first Saturday of each month.
You can also stroll along Royal and Chartres Streets and window shop, and perhaps even buy one-of-a-kind arts and antiques.
The French Quarter Festival is held every April and it is the South’s largest music festival which is completely free for everyone. You can watch ships pass along the Mississippi River from the Woldenberg Riverfront Park.
The historic National Orleans Collection and the Williams Research Center are also open all year long. Children can run around freely and enjoy themselves in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden in City Parl.
