Is Mackinac Island Haunted?
The Moral Re-armament Building, one of the buildings on the island, was donated to be used as Mackinac College and one of the island’s most famous ghosts was one of the school’s students.
The ghost is said to be a flirt with women and a practical joker with men. According to stories, the ghost was that of a young man who had a girlfriend at the college.
He was so in love with his girlfriend and had wanted to marry her but she turned his proposal down.
According to legends, he went into the woods and committed suicide. He went missing in February and was not found until July. Although his death was ruled a suicide, many believe that there was another person who was involved with his death.
Others have reported hearing disembodied voices whispering in their ears, as well as the feeling of being watched or observed.
Old Presque Isle Light
The lighthouse’s most famous ghost is that of the keeper’s wife who was locked away in the tower many years ago due to her mental state. She can be heard screaming during some nights and that of George Parris.
George and his wife moved into the keeper’s cottage during the 1990s to run the museum and give tours to guests. Since George died, the light in the lighthouse comes on at dusk and fades away at dawn although the light had been permanently disabled.
Haunted Hotels on Mackinac Island
The Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel is an embodiment of beauty and history. It has long white walls which can be easily seen from the water when on the ferry ride.
However, the hotel is known more for its paranormal activity than its beauty. When the hotel expanded, the island’s cemetery was moved to give room to the stables. Those who have worked at the hotel say that they can hear phantom footsteps and doors opening and shutting by themselves.

Perry Hotel
Perry Hotel is said to be haunted by a woman who committed suicide in the hotel in 1902. People report that she can be seen frequently looking toward the lake.
Mission Point Resort
Featured on the SyFy Channel’s TV show Ghost Hunters, the resort’s most popular ghost is Lucy. She was taken ill suddenly on the island but her parents had to leave to take care of business in Detroit. She died before her parents got back.
Locals as well as tourists, report seeing the apparition of a little girl on the balcony of Mission Point and hearing a young female voice calling for her mom and dad.
