Reported Ghosts of Fairfield Hills State Hospital
Fairfield Hills State Hospital is a bucolic place but it has a dark and ugly past. The most popular reason why people come to visit is the paranormal activity in the area. After all, it has gained a reputation as being one of the most haunted places in the state.
Just like other mental hospitals of the time, the treatments, by today’s standards would be considered cruel and inhumane. Some of the treatments for patients were psychosurgery, hydrotherapy, electric shock therapy and unauthorized frontal lobotomies. There were also several suicides and mysterious deaths in the hospital grounds. Stories of cruelty and abuse were rampant during the hospital’s operation.
Disembodied voices have been heard in the hospital, presumably those of its former patients screaming in pain and agony while they were being treated. Visitors to the grounds have reported seeing people dressed in white and they believe that these apparitions are that of the former employees and patients of the hospital.
The campus-like facility was designed to help alleviate overcrowding at the two other state hospitals. The colonial style buildings were built of red brick and were attractively accented. The original buildings were fireproof all throughout; however, other buildings were built in later years.
The hospital had 16 buildings in total and an additional 670 acres of land around them. The lands consist most of a forest and a large farm meadows. The first patients were received in the hospital on the 1st of June 1933. Initially, there were less than 500 patients and 3 doctors. By the late 1960s it has more than 4,000 patients, 50 nurses, 20 doctors and 100 more employees.
The hospital was finally closed on the 8th of December 1995. The patients were transferred to the Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middleton, Connecticut. Because of its reputation, Fairfield Hills was featured on MTV’s Fear.
The institution which was privately owned at one time is now owned by the state. Patrolled by state troopers, there are numerous underground tunnels inside. However, none of them are passable because they are all welded shut at the doors. Every Halloween there are at least 4 squad cars patrolling the area.
